Reproduction was studied in triploid Crassostrea gigas, by crossing gametes from diploid and triploid parents.Triploids are able to produce viable gametes and their resulting progeny consisted in diploids, aneuploids and polyploids. Gametes from triploid parents frequently led to abnormal polar body formation, even before caryogamy occurred. A high frequency of aneuploids was observed, related to the missegregation of chromosomes during meiosis in triploids. This might be due to the observed incomplete synapsis in triploid eggs during Prophase I. Abnormal mortality outbreaks occurred in the majority of Pacific oyster (Crassostrea gigas) producing areas in France in 2008 during the summer period. These outbreaks were usually sudden and severe (up to 100%) and affected essentially spat (oysters less than 1 year-old) and juveniles (12 to 18 month-old oysters). Crassostrea gigas was the single affected species Mortality outbreaks were first observed from mid May to mid June in Brittany, Vendée, Charente Maritime and Mediterranean coast A second episode of massive mortality events was reported at the end of June and the beginning of July. Because of diseases affecting fIat oyster Ostrea edulis, acclimatization of the Argentina oyster Ostrea puelchana has been tested in 1989-90 in five French oyster farming sites. Following ICES recommendations , hatchery produced juveniles, from parents imported from Argentina, were transferred to experimental si tes in summer 1989. Very high mortalities occurred, reaching 46 to 98% in March-Apri1 1990. They continued later on, resulting in the end of experiments in March 1991. The growth of surviving oysters was relatively poor in comparison of the local species. The Apalachicola Bay, Florida, eastern oyster (Crassostrea virginica) industry has annually produced about 10% of the U.S. oyster harvest. Today’s simple individual-operator, hand-tonging, small-vessel fishery is remarkably similar to the one that began in the 1800s. Unprecedented attention is currently being given to the status of oyster resources in Apalachicola Bay because this fishery has become central to the decision making related to multistate water disputes in the southeastern United States, as well as millions of dollars in funding for restoration programs related to the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. The oyster population in the Maryland portion of the Chesapeake Bay has declined b y more than 38-fold since the early part of the century. Although the effects of fishing have been implicated, the decline has been attributed primarily to water quality and recently oyster disease. The decline has also been thought to have affected the biota and chemistry of the Bay. Our analysis provides a quantitative demonstration that the long-term declines are largely the result of habitat loss related to over fishing early in the century, stock over fishing, early in the century' through the recent times. Summer mortality associated with juveniles of the oyster Crassostrea gigas is probably the result of a complex interaction between the host, pathogens and environmental factors. Genetic variability in the host appears to be a major determinant in its sensitivity to summer mortality. Previously, divergent selection criteria based on summer survival have been applied to produce oyster families with resistant and susceptible progeny. Digestive microbiota provides a wide range of beneficial effects on host physiology and are therefore likely to play a key role in marine intertidal bivalve ability to acclimatize to the intertidal zone. This study investigated the effect of intertidal levels on the digestive bacterial microbiota of oysters Crassostrea gigas and clams Ruditapes philippinarum, two bivalves with different ecological niches. Le naissain d’huître creuse Crassostrea gigas est touché chaque année depuis 2008 par des mortalités causées par un microvariant de l’ostreid herpesvirus 1 (OsHV-1 μVar).
